The example you give inFind Your Whywas how you run into Americans overseas and youre like, Hey, youre from New York, Im from Michigan- we should totally hang out for the day Whereas if I met somebody from New York here in Silicon Valley, I would leid care at all.SimonTrust is essential because we want to know that somebodys got our backs. Like how do you know your friends are your friends? Love and trust and all of these things, theyre feelings, not instructions. You cannot order people to trust each other. They are feelings, and they are born out of the environment. The environment comes from shared values and shared belonging.As you said, I live in New York, but if somebody comes up to me and says, Im from New York too, we should be friends, Im like, Youre weird. But if Im standing in Paris, where I dont feel like I belong, and I hear an American accent on the Paris Metro, Im going to walk up and say, Where are you guys from? Youre from Alabama? Im from New York And were going to be friends because neither of us feels like we belong. Simply hearing an accent, or knowing that these people have a common sense of what we stand for and the experiences weve had, creates a sense of camaraderie amongst us in this world in which we dont feel like we belong.Its tribalism, and the modern-day tribe is the company - so the best companies are values-based.They ha ve a sense of purpose and cause, and when we work there, we feel like we can be ourselves.Trust is a biological construction born out of the environments were in.JordanHow can we foster this not just in our companies, but within circles of friends, within families? Do you find yourself applying these things in your personal life outside of work?SimonThe only difference between work and home are the clothes we wear and the tables we sit at. I am who I am, and the reason my friends love me is the same reason my colleagues love me. Its me, and if Im different in one of those two places, then in one of those two places, Im lying. Authenticity means that you say and do the things you actually believe. If others believe what you believe, they will be drawn to you. If they dont believe what you believe, they will be repelled by you. Its not good or bad - we dont have to hate people who have different beliefs. We dont have to be friends with everybody either, but we do have to respect othe r beliefs, we have to respect things that are not our own.And what you do is you find your tribe. Sometimes its silly that when youre going to a game and you binnensee somebody wearing the same jersey as you because of the same team, you say hi to them. These are total strangers who just happen to like the same team, yet we feel this intense camaraderie at a finals game. Were tribal - we want to feel tresor amongst our own. We know that somebody in that jersey will probably defend us if somebody from the other team attacks us.So when we seek to trust others, and we want others to trust us, somebody has to go first - and its the leader who takes the risk to trust first. Ive never in my life heard a great leader say, Give me a reason why I should trust you. They simply bestow trust. Ive never in my life heard a great leader that says, Prove why I should give you more responsibility. They assess someones skills and potential, and take the risk to give them more responsibility.Sometim es they get it right, and that person may discover that theyre capable of more than they thought, or they get it wrong, giving more responsibility a little too soon. Its like being a parent - we want to see our kids grow, and sometimes we give them a long leash, and sometimes we keep them on a short leash. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we get it wrong, and its a dance. But if its a healthy relationship, the kid knows that its always based in love.Good leadership is the same thing. When were building friendships, its a dance. We abflug slowly, we take little risks, we open ourselves up a little bit, they reciprocate, and then you do a little more, and then they reciprocate, and eventually at some point, you wake up in the morning and youre like, Oh my God, I totally trust them.And you trust them because you feel like you can be yourself around them. You can express your values, desires, comforts, and discomforts, and even though they may disagree, they wont judge you, and you will never feel like youre being judged. This is what we all seek, as human beings - this is what we all desire. We want this in our relationships, we want this in our friendships, and frankly, we want it at work too.JordanSo in this way, were sort of shaping each other with our expectations. We give each other a little bit of responsibility, and you either meet that challenge, or you fail. And if we say what we believe and we do what we believe, well attract people who believe what we believe. That actually comes into play with how I met my wife - she used to listen to the show all the time, and when we started talking online, she was really curious if I was actually the person that she had heard all these years on the podcast. So one of the primary drivers was, Okay, is this guy going to be like he is on the show, or is he just this total jerk? Im curious enough to go out with him at least once. And now were married.If others believe what you believe, they will be drawn to you. SimonThats 100% right. And some people, unfortunately, do become affected by the recognition that comes their way, and they arent the people who they portray themselves to be, and were disappointed. Its like the rule, Never meet your heroes.It reminds me of one of my favorite stories, of a former Undersecretary of Defense who is giving a presentation to a large conference, about 1,000 people. Hes giving his prepared remarks and in the middle of his remarks, he interrupts himself and smiles and says, You know, brde year I was still the undersecretary, and I spoke at this exact same conference.Last year, I flew here business class, and there was somebody waiting for me at the airport to take me to the hotel. They took me to the hotel, and somebody had already checked me in, and they simply took me up to my room. The next morning, I came down and somebody was waiting for me in the lobby, and they brought me to this venue. They took me into the green room and handed me a cup of coffee i n a beautiful ceramic cup.He says, Im no longer the undersecretary, and I flew here coach. I took a taxi to the hotel, I checked myself in. This morning, I came down and took another taxi to the venue. I walked through the front doors, found my way backstage, and when I asked somebody, Do you have any coffee? he pointed to the coffee machine, and I poured myself a cup of coffee into this styrofoam cup. The ceramic cup was never meant for me. It was meant for the ort I held. I deserve a styrofoam cup.And thats the point - we all only deserve a styrofoam cup. And many of the perks that we are given come as a result of the position we hold, not based on who we are.As you gain fame or rank, people do treat you differently they respect the rank. They hold doors open for you, they send you gifts, they call you sir or maam, they bring you tea or coffee without you asking. If you left your coat in the other room, someone will get your coat for you.There are perks - including money - that come with rising in the social hierarchy, and the great leaders are the ones who understand that those perks are being given to their rank, not to them. And the ones that disappoint us are the ones that believe that theyre entitled to those perks, that they deserve the ceramic cup.JordanHow do we get in there before we start conflating our position with our identity? I didnt have a downfall from Undersecretary to styrofoam cup, but Id certainly had a dip where I went, Oh my God, Im just nobody again. Ive got to start over. This is terrible. I had wrapped my status around my identity so tightly that once it came off, I was a bucket of jello. Thankfully, my producer Jason and my wife were both like, Hey, get out of bed, jerk. Weve got work to do.SimonYou answered the question yourself other people. Somebody reminded you that youre wonderful, somebody told you to get over yourself.Whoever thinks they can do this thing called life by themselves is kidding themselves. Life is really dif ficult, and it takes a lot of help. Anybody who thinks they can do this thing called career by themselves is nuts. Life, business, career, profession, parenting - all of these things are incredibly difficult, and they require advice, emotional support, mentorship, friendship, and the ability to ask for and receive help.You had other people in your life - thats a very good thing, and in this day and age, we have our devices in our lives so much that many of us are either not learning or forgetting good social skills how to interact with human beings, and how to ask for help, how to rely on people. And when we dont ask for help, or there arent others there for us - and I dont mean in an online chat room, I mean a physical human being - we become lonelier and lonelier, and the situation becomes more and more desperate. Had your producer and your wife not been there for you, you would have continued to spiral down, and it would have taken some sort of significant act to get you out of it, or something horrible would have happened.I think we undervalue the importance of social skills. Its not something you take a class for, but its something that takes years to practice crying with a friend, asking for help, expressing yourself, expressing anger in a healthy way, all of these things that we just brush off and call being human. I cannot stand the term soft skills. Its hard skills and human skills, and we have to learn both. Both require education, and both require practice. Were not born with these skills - its our upbringing and the way we choose to live our lives that make us good and healthy and able to apply these skills when necessary.JordanWhat would you tell someone who you see is excelling, getting to the top, but has sacrificed a lot of their relationships? Is there any way you can get someone to wake up and smell the coffee, and realize that theyre headed for disaster? Because as soon as they hit a stumbling block, they wont have a support group aroun d them.Many of the perks that we are given come as a result of the position we hold, not based on who we are.SimonI think you just summed up the problem in our country today too much telling and not enough listening. The left is trying to tell the right, the right is trying to tell the left. The pro-gun lobby is trying to tell the gun control lobby, and the gun control lobby is trying to tell the pro-gun lobby. Everybody is telling everybody what it should be and what they should do, and nobody listens. If I had a friend in that position, I wouldnt tell him anything. I would ask, Are you happy? How are you? What is going on? I would shut up and listen.I think this is one of the most essential skills in life that has almost completely fallen by the wayside and in modern America, which isthe art of listening, the skill of listening - a very difficult skill that requires education and tons of practice.If you do it right, active listening makes you exhausted by the end because it takes so much energy. Where you dont just hear the words that are spoken, but you understand the meaning behind those words. Where you seek out common ground, to try to find whether there are common values - only then can you actually start to have a discussion.I think the lesson is best captured by a story that Nelson Mandela used to tell. He was asked once, How did you learn to become a great leader? What people dont realize is that he was actually born the son of a tribal chief, and he said, I went to tribal meetings with my father when I was a boy, and I remember two things They always sat in a circle, and my father was always the brde to speak.Even though his father had rank, he paid everyone respect and treated them with equality by sitting in a circle. He didnt sit at the head of the table per se, and instead of speaking first, he chose to speak last. Were always telling each other, You have to learn to listen, but I think its a lesson best captured with the advice, Practice bein g the last to speak. Think about how we start meetings - even well-intentioned leaders walk into a room and say, Okay, guys, heres the problem, and heres what I think we should do, and I really want to know what you think.Well, its too late - youve either biased the room, or youve made people think or feel that their opinions dont matter. Strong leaders are the ones who say, Heres the problem. Tell me what you think, and do so with such a poker face that as youre speaking, you dont know if they agree or disagree with you. Theyre trying to take in all the counsel from everyone. Even if the leader makes a decision that is opposite to the one that you are recommending, you feel heard.Just think about it in terms of friendship - men are particularly bad at this. All we want to do is fix problems. So somebody says, Oh, Ive got this going on, and we go, Oh, you know what you should do? You should totally do this. We all do it, but sometimes all people want is just to feel heard. When s omebody says, Oh, my babo is driving me crazy, instead of offering them a bunch of solutions, we can simply say, Wow, that sucks. Tell me more. We think they want a solution, but what they want is somebody to listen. The biggest issue that gets in the way of saving for retirement The biggest issue that gets in the way of saving for retirement Recent data from Schwab Retirement Plan Services  shows that 40% of Americans say that “paying for unexpected expenses like home repairs” gets in the way of paying for retirement.In terms of how the research was carried out,  Logica Research polled 1,000 American workers between 25 and 70, who are putting money away for retirement in their 401(k)s. Why Employers Don’t Always Respond After Job Interviews Why Employers Don’t Always Respond After Job Interviews You had a great interview for a job you really want. Your answers were spot-on, you connected with the interviewer, your test went well…but you haven’t heard back from your future boss-to-be. As frustrating as it might be, this happens quite often. According to a CareerBuilder survey, a staggering 75% of people said they didn’t hear back from a position they had applied for. The reasons below might help explain why employers don’t respond after job interviews. Why Employers Don’t Respond After Job Interviews They’re too busy. A potential employer might be trying to not only fill the position you applied for, but several others as well…simultaneously. So it makes sense, then, that they might be too busy to get back to just one candidate about just one job opening. And while it might not seem like a real reason, being swamped with reviewing job applications, scheduling interviews, and screening candidates can oftentimes be the real reason why employers don’t respond right away (if at all) after job interviews. You weren’t chosen. This might be one of the most obvious reasons why job seekers don’t hear back from employers. Still, most people would agree that they would rather get a friendly “Thanks, but no thanks” email or phone call than the alternative- being ignored. If you haven’t heard back after a few weeks post-interview (and you didn’t hear back even after you followed up on your job application), it’s safe to assume that you didn’t get the position and should keep interviewing with other companies. They’re afraid of legal issues. In today’s litigious world, it seems like almost any excuse can be grounds for a lawsuit- and companies know that all too well. So instead of calling to let you know why you specifically weren’t hired (e.g., you didn’t have the required skill set, you didn’t get a good reference from a previous employer, etc.), hiring managers may adopt a “silence is golden” rule when dealing with those not hired. By not responding, the door is closed. If by some chance a hiring manager did offer a reason as to why you weren’t hired, they might fear that you’ll contact them again with follow-up questions. To avoid having that line of communication- and potentially getting into trouble- they keep the door closed to prevent future questions and prevent hurting your feelings. They’re still interviewing. You applied for a job almost immediately after you spotted it online. Thing is, maybe 100 other eager job candidates did, too. One of the big reasons why employers don’t respond after job interviews could be because they’re slowly weeding through the stacks of job applications and following up with applicants they’re interested in interviewing. Another thing to keep in mind is that maybe the position doesn’t have to be filled immediately, or some aspect of the job has changed and management is working out the new specifics of the role. In any case, the employer has extra time to go through the hiring process and might get back to you…eventually. The job isn’t available anymore. In an ideal world, a prospective boss would clue you in if the position you diligently applied for wasn’t available anymore, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes, the unexpected happens after a job is posted (for example, the position is eliminated, revamped, or it’s given to a current staffer), and employers don’t always explain what happened to the job; they just go radio silent instead. They forgot about you. Accidents can (and do) happen during the hiring process. Applications are deleted and job candidates can be forgotten about. That’s why it’s so important to always follow up on job applications (especially the ones that you’re really interested in). Not only does it show your continued interest in the job, it also allows you to correct any potential blunders you may have committed during the job interview. But most importantly, if a hiring manager did manage to misplace your application, it puts you front and center in his mind again. They’re totally rude. To you, the job you applied for could change the trajectory of your career- and your life. For a recruiter or hiring manager, you might be just another applicant. Don’t take it too much to heart. If you don’t hear back from a potential employer  (and you’ve followed up and done everything that you can as an interested job candidate), don’t take it too personally. While it’s painful to sit and wonder why you never heard back, just remember- the job that’s truly meant for you could be just around the corner. There’s just no real reason why. Sometimes, an employer doesn’t get back to a job candidate for the reason that there just isn’t a reason. It wasn’t like you bombed the interview- but you didn’t exactly ace it, either. You were nice enough, but you might not have been a standout candidate. Your answers were good, but not enough to seal the deal. And for an employer to try to articulate that you did nothing wrong (but still didn’t get the job) can be confusing and upsetting to a candidate. You didnt click with your interviewer. Sure, job candidates should be judged based solely on their qualifications and prior job experience. But that doesn’t always happen. Like it or not, some employers base their decisions on factors that are completely not related to the job, such as a person’s appearance, their lack of eye contact, or even their self-confidence level. And even though it might not be fair, if personalities don’t mesh well during a job interview (or worse, they clash), it can negatively impact your chances of getting hired. So if the reason for not hiring you is a personal one, it could open up an employer to a potential lawsuit if they were to disclose it. You didn’t ask for it. It might seem strange to ask a prospective employer for a reason why you didn’t get hired as the job interview is actually happening, but it could be a smart move. Let’s say that you’re on-ramping back into the workforce, just recently graduated from college, or are still an interview newbie, for example. Asking ahead of time (either at the end of the interview or during your follow-up communication afterwards), for an employer to assess why you might not get the job shows that you’re mature enough to realize that there are probably a lot of candidates vying for the same job, and you might not get a job offer. In this case, it’s not so much about placing blame towards your potential employer about not getting hired, but finding out what you may have done incorrectly so that you can improve your job interviewing skills for subsequent job interviews. No one is upset; in fact, everyone is being supportive of my move. The issue is that I’m finding it hard to be motivated and worried that these six weeks are going to drag on. Because I work quite quickly, I’ll have nothing to do for the last few weeks. How do I keep myself going and not give up mentally? Signed, Thumb Twiddler Dear Thumb Twiddler, It sounds like this is an intentional move, so first, congrats! There are lots of ways to leave your mark once you give notice you’re quitting, and the fact that you have six whole weeks (less by the time you’re reading this), means you can cover all the important stuff. You always hear “don’t burn bridges,” but there’s so much more you can do besides leaving all bridges intact. Here are a few things (that’ll show returns later in your career). Leave a Legacy Leaving something for your former colleagues to talk about long after you depart will seriously boost your professional rep which, in turn, will make future outreach to these connections much easier. Think about problems you ran into in your daily routine or things that took a long time to learn when you first started. You may have been too busy to fix a drawn-out process or show your co-workers a workaround that you discovered while you were up to your neck in work, which is why now is the perfect time to tackle these items. Writing a handbook on your role or simply documenting a process you followed will leave your name on something tangible that will make your former co-workers lives easier. Train Your Replacement Nothing will make your immediate team and manager happier than getting a replacement up to speed quickly. Not to mention, training a new hire is an incredible experience. This won’t always be possible when you have a short timeline, but there’s typically something small you can do. Whether it’s helping write the job description for your role, getting involved in the hiring process, or offering to work alongside the new person for a week (or even a day, if that’s all you can spare), see what you can do to reduce the stress on the rest of the organization. Nobody can explain how to do your job better than you, so pass on your knowledge to leave a lasting mark. Bolster Your Professional Brand You’re currently on your way out of an organization, and the terms are good. Presumably you still have access to your email, and you have the opportunity to speak with your co-workers in person before your departure. Use this time to network! This is a great chance for you to buy a few of your close colleagues (especially managers) a coffee and tell them about your next move. A final real-life interaction will make connecting and interacting online much easier. After all, these are the people who you might want ask to endorse and recommend you on LinkedIn. In the end, you may still find yourself with some idle time in your final days, and that’s OK. You’ve checked all the boxes by giving ample notice and informing everyone who will be affected. Be helpful and offer your time and expertise where you can. People tend to remember the last interactions they have with you- so arguably that final impression is just as, if not more, important as the first. I know it’s challenging not to mentally check out, but if you’ve read this far, that doesn’t seem likely.
